What Is Coltsfoot?

Coltsfoot is a plant native to Eurasia that now grows abundantly in Quebec. Its flower buds are especially interesting: they make excellent herbal teas and are handy for seasoning meals.

How to Use Coltsfoot

Steep it as an infusion, on its own or combined with other spring plants, for a soothing moment. Coltsfoot can also be prepared as a decoction to soothe the airways and ease cold symptoms. Traditionally, it has been used for its expectorant and soothing effects on the throat and lungs.

Its Natural Habitat

Coltsfoot is a perennial sometimes mistaken for dandelion because of its shape and colour. This early spring herb is probably the first to bloom each season, making it vital for feeding bees.

It is considered a weed that can affect some field crops such as soy, grains, alfalfa and corn. It grows in rough, damp, clay-rich ground, along roadsides, in ditches and similar spots.
