What Is Bunchberry?

Bunchberry, also known as Canadian dwarf dogwood, is a very common plant in Quebec's conifer forests. This perennial native to North America produces pretty little creamy white flowers. Its berries are edible and enjoyed in pies, puddings and jams, or simply eaten raw. The plant can be used in herbal tea, and some people have traditionally smoked the leaves like tobacco.

How to Use Bunchberry

Steep it on its own or blended with other northern plants for a herbal tea with deep, comforting aromas. It also works in cooking, adding a unique forest note to sauces and desserts. Traditionally, it has also been used in steam baths or decoctions, valued for its soothing scent and skin-friendly properties.

Its Natural Habitat

Bunchberry makes an excellent dense, dark green ground cover and is easy to grow as long as there's moisture. It tolerates almost any soil, acidic or neutral, grows in full sun or partial shade, and isn't sensitive to frost.

It blooms from early summer until late fall. There's no need for separate male and female plants to get fruit, since the species is hermaphroditic, with both sexes on the same plant.
